3. Using carefully chosen diction to highlight the topic and whatever tone you deem appropriate to go along with it, describe this subject in approximately 200 words or less. Do not name the subject or use any words that would obviously give it away.
4. Post this comment by Monday, August 30th at midnight.
5. By Friday, September 3rd at midnight, you need to comment on at least three of your classmates' comments. I expect that most of these comments will be guesses as to the subject of their descriptions. As such, your theories should contain well-thought out logic and reasoning. ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with the author in the first article. Even though this is my first time reading about diction, I completely understand its meaning. There are so many different tones in today's society, and there are only a few that you can identify right away, pretty much based on the context surrounding it. For example, if your dog knocked over the trash can, you would use a copmpletely different tone than if you were trying to coax a two year old to go to bed on Christmas Eve. My personal belief is that the article in question is a good article that distinguishes between diction and tone.
ReplyDeleteThe second article, New Words Added to the Dictionary, is a waste of time. It is actually a good article. However, the 2,000 new words that have been added are slang words from modern day speech, not actual words. Words like bromance and staycation can be used in everyday language, or as a joke, but they don't belong in a dictionary. At the rate our society is going now, in 50 years, our descendants will probably not think twice about those words: they will consider it normal, and just continue on with life. Although it could be used as a good joke website, I think that it is not worth reading. Words that are in the dictionary are words that are in use every day, not just once in a while, such as the or and or menopause. :)

This person has been there in your whole entire life time. This person will always be there, for example taking care of you when you needed a ride to school or from home. Also this person will always be there with you in your time of need, your time of sympathy and always be there when you have been heart broken throught your life. No matter if you had this person in your life there is one person you might think relates to this desciption that I am trying to explain to you. This person has been there for you through the good and bad you might think that this person is sometimes unfair or just that sometimes they might not understand what you are going through.

It still has that beautiful shine & has always had a way of bettering my mood or just calming me down. It is probably my most cherished material possession, & in this life there are not many. I've never been much of a materialistic person, I know that the most important people in my life will always mean more to me than any object ever will. Although this item is intended for entertainment purposes it has always been able to do more than just that. ReplyDeleteProtection. That's my main purpose. Hold me and I'll be yours forever. Or just as long as you need me to keep you safe. But for the most part, I'm neglected. You can find me shunned inside the hall closet, just waiting for someone to pick me up. I often feel unused and unwanted enough to be held in someone's hand. But when I am, it's the best thing ever. The thought that someone actually needs me gives me a sense of importance, of belonging. But that feeling doesn't last long, for I am nothing but an occasional necessity, something that's needed only when convenient. Why is this? Is it because the way I look? ReplyDeleteAlways sitting in the back of a drawer were no one ever needs it again. I used to provide people entertainment and now newer forms of entertainment have been created. I get used once and never again will anyone touch me unless they absolutely have to. I am more expensive than other forms of entertainment, but that doesn't mean that no should purchase me. I give people information and sound yet people don't use me as much as they used to. I am round and flat and I could also fit anywhere, but sadly I am forever trapped in the back of a drawer filled with other objects no one will ever use again. I provide excellent entertainment on the road, but that is outdated. It's all about the modern and pretty things of life. I'm just an oudated form of entertainement that will never agin be used. ReplyDeleteI don't use this particular item as much like other girls do. It has a strong stench when I open it that still I am not immune to, reminds me of an alchohol smell. Some people find it a relaxing smell, others find it too strong which results to a headache. This particular item comes in an enormous amount of colors and shades. There exists many brands of it too since it's such a common item used between girls since its more viewed as a feminin material. Its difficult to remove once the object has been used, it usually can be scratched off or a special chemical could just swipe it off. Professionals use it as do everyday people just to be decorative. So, can you guess the specific item I am describing?

ReplyDeleteYou fill me up with a happy filling. I can attain you with a simple swipe of a card. If a card is not at hand I recieve you with exchange of green paper. When I arrive home I remove your packaging and enjoy what you have to offer. Another can save for a week and still not get near as to what I have. I can combine it together or just have one alone. Others call it unhealthy how much I can take in. In this game an average person cannot beat me. I take in as much as I please. Though it is a need I make it a want. I cannot conform to a limited amount. You look at me and think "How much can one take?" I take as much as I please until I am pleased. When I finished I am filled with pleasure. Later on when I have that empty feeling I yet again return to repeat what I have done earlier in that same day. Can you guess my object? Can you guess my verb? You do as much as I. He just showed up out of no where and came into my life. There is no way to get away from him. His life is intertwined with mine. He is there for me at the good times and the bad times. He cheers me up and brings me down. I feel lonely without him around, but when he is with me I want to have my me time. We are so alike, and yet so dfferent. I can't understand him sometimes like what he is feeling, but we think the same. He has gotten older and so have I. Immediatly, one can notice this is a person with a professional background and has a good education. His style of writing is explicit leaving no doubt and making his statement very clear.
In the contrary, Ryan DeVries uses a tone of sardonicism, with that being said we can conclude he is upset and does not agree with the idea. His style of writing is informal, states the word "dam" numerous times, and threatens the Department of Environmental Quality which all together sounds like nonsence and very unprofessional

He stares back at me. He knows I’m watching but does not communicate in English language for nature forbids it. His heavy breath makes me sweat and when he’s too happy, I think about when his life could be possibly coming to an end. God, can I just keep him for a few more years? ReplyDeleteThis is someone who is usually not found easily. Its is neither an animal or an inanimate object. It is for holding. It is to store all your secrets most intimate thoughts into. It can help you appreciate yourself more than you may of did before. Also, it can help appreciate what you have. This is not found around the corner. It may not be an easy thing to see.But It is something that can be found by the blind. Anyone can find it_just don't be a fool and be cool when you find it, because if your not.. it can be gone in less than a second.
ReplyDeleteI often use it like 24/7 but ever since my AP classes i have not been using it much except for HW. I can use it for research, music, homework, videos, communication, ect. It is always on no matter what time of the day it is. It also has its own little section in the house. I also do not like spilling liquids on it because it will get ruined. Once in a while it also catches a bad cold through a virus and it usually takes quite some time to get better.

Upon arrival, I noticed many familiar faces. The main buzz of activity seems to be coming from the next room. As I entered, I noticed everyone crowded around the oven baked centerpiece laced with a sugary coating, topped with wax pillars sporting wildly flickering flames. The room goes silent as the guest of honor approaches the table appearing to be in deep thought; he pauses as to be contemplating his future. Then with one rapid exhale, the wax pillars go dark, leaving only a wisp of smoke to fill the air. Immediately, the room is filled with loud applause as the hands of the many guests come together congratulating this achievement. High fives, hugs, and pats on the back surround the guest of honor. Conversations quickly turn to future plans and goals.

Every changing, it can be smooth as fleece, or it can make evoke the feeling of lowness among anything and everything around you. When man tries to replicate it, they never succeed, for they can never create the very exact elements that it requires to be as such as it is. ReplyDeleteThe feeling i get when i see her, the way we both wrinkle our nose when we laugh, or how we do stuff in a certain way. We have very similar personalities, but completely different appearance. Her body is covered with what some people consider art, and piercings. Her artistic and poetic skills, are magnificent. Our taste in music, and what we wear is also very different. We are very distant from one another (physically), 6 hours to be exact. But our emotional connection is stronger than any. The way i can tell her anything, and how she knows what to say to make everything seem better. We are connected, whether we want it or not. Many of us take these kind of people for granted, even i did.

This spectacular machine never complains,whines, or give you an attitude even though we constantly abuse it with our thumbs. We drop it but it still does its very important job.(most of the time if its not cheap) When we are stranded and need help we simply apply this wonderful item close to our ear and it magically telaports our voice to other peoples ears. How would our constantly busy world servive without such a genuis mechanism? Well it deffinatly could not, we need this important piece of plastic and metal put together constantly with us so we dont feel as if we are empty. Comunication is easily achieved with such advanced technology.

Nobody likes me. People are disgusted by the way I look. Once i find my designated spot, I will stay there. I can go away the next day or stay and appear in many different places. Many cover me up because they are ashamed by the way I look. It is not easy to get rid of me. I will scar or bleed if you mess with me. I am either small or big, pink or red. I will go, then appear again some other time. I am everywhere, but as you grow older, I won't want you anymore.

It can destroy ones life but it can also spruce ones life up. It can turn a boring "function" into the best night of your life. You might wake up with a tramp stamp and hugging the bathroom floor but it gives memories. It comes in different shapes, sizes, and "bang" or "oomph". Some cant live without it and some abuse it. HINT: all you LOCOS know what its 4 or might think its JOOSE.. LOL and yess you can make it very dirty ; ) ahahaha
Some might say it's addicted to the spot light, but it's in the back keeping everyone else together. It is loud, entertaining, and famous in most parts of the world. When you treat it right it stays shiny. If you treat it wrong its sweet sound dies with your talent. It is beat but does not scream as a human would. When it is hit, it makes different sounds depending on what part of it is hit. The beating is not a punishment because it keeps the personality. Abuse is not a word that the cops use, it's more of a public disturbance.
