Blog 1 (January 24-28): Censorship

Not only did we discuss this topic in class last week, but it frequently appears on the SAT and AP exams.

Background:
On the surface, censorship seems objectionable because it limits our freedom. But all societies may need to suppress or restrict information that is "offensive" or potentially harmful. People depend on the establishment of some limits, claiming that this is some way of making distinctions between what is right and what is wrong. The argument exists that censorship could actually be beneficial to a society because it helps to establish ideals of what is proper in such areas as art, music, and literature.

Assignment:
Should society limit people's exposure to some kinds of information or forms of expression? In three to four well-developed paragraphs, develop your point of view on this issue (avoid waffling). Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Optional, extra credit assignment: 
Engage in a meaningful conversation (one paragraph or more) with at least one of your classmates.

  1. Society should limit peoples exposure to certain kinds of information depending on the individual. For example, their is this one Playstation 2 game I used to play called “Grand Theft Auto San Andreas”. It could be a very violent and gruesome game. Normally, most people could do the craziest things on that game like jack cars, etc, and not be bothered by it. Then there are some people who will see one violent thing on the game and go into shock, trauma or something crazy, or try to mimic the game in real life. In the past, a kid jacked a car in real life just because he did it in the game and willingly told the judge.
    However, Censorship in most cases is not really required. It really depends on the sanity and maturity of the person. But at the same time, Censorship may also be blocking offensive material such as racial or sexist comments and images. This type of content being blocked can prevent conflicts and violence. It really depends on the content and individual.
    Also, when you watch certain programs such as Adult Swim, Censorship can become quite annoying. It normally blocks the cool parts of the show. Some people may even resort to violence as well when there favorite part of a show is blocked, ie breaking their television. These are some cases where Censorship is not exactly a good thing. Overall in my opinion, Censorship is not necessarily a bad or good thing.

  2. Society is exposed to many thing on a daily bases. Due to censorship society is limited to what the public is getting to know. Therefore, society should be limited to what the get to know.
    For example, society is made up of different age group. If censorship did not exist the younger age group would be expose to many violience. Also, the mind would get to a point that the would want to react what ever they see on TV. In addition, censorship give the parent more of a chance to choose what their childern view on television and in video games.
    Terh censorship on video games is get to todays society. With out there being censorship to what happen in the game the violience would be goign up. Due to that little kids get intrested in the violience that is going on in the games. Plus, also the sexual content that video games have is limited deu to censorship.
    All in all limiting to what society get to find out is a great idea. Due to the fact that people get ideas to what they can do in real life do to what goes on in televesion or video games. Finally, that parent can have control on what their childern get to see and view.

  3. Nowadays society has been exposing too much expression. The expressions shown is expression of freedom that may be too liberal and can harm people’s feelings. This is causing a lot of censoring to be going on. Everything that goes and is published has to be censored.
    Society should limit a little more what gets out there because things like poems, songs and even T.V. shows are offensive and do not really show from right to wrong. Another area that may show hurtful and inappropriate things is art. Art is suppose to be for showing what the artists feel inside but pictures can be taken different ways to people. Other people can see nice things but others can analyze it differently and take things the wrong way.
    Censorship is suppose to block anything that should not be said or seen. There are certain movies that the youth should not watch but yet cartoons and video games are showing things that kids are not suppose to be seeing and they are being seen like violence. More things should start being censored and blocked.
    Society is showing too much exposure to violence and inappropriate things. There should be more censoring.

  4. Society in my opinion should censor some of what people see, especially children or adolescents. Some television shows, movies and video games these days can be very graphic and violent. For example, the show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”, although it is entertaining for some people, it talks about sex, drinking, and shows them too. This is something that children should not see, because they idolize these girls and come to believe their behavior s acceptable. Watching a show like that can make a child or young teenager act out, thinking it is okay to do because the Kardashian girls did it.

    Another thing that should be censored is video games. Many video games that are released now such as “The Sims”, “Grand Theft Auto”, etc. have very violent and sexual activity within them. As much as young people play video games now, it would not be acceptable if a middle school child were to play these games and see it as an example. It could cause the child’s mind to be corrupt and make them think as if they are playing the game at all times. This can be detrimental to the child and those around them.

    Censorship is important in our society these days because it gives parents an opportunity to limit their children and young adolescents exposure to foul language, sexual content, violence and more. When parents censor what their young watch it helps to keep them from developing violent and adult like tendencies at such a young age.

  5. Censorship is very important to a society. However, it should not be used to completely block someone's exposure to information or other forms of expression. Censorship may seem to help a society but it will hold them back more. Censorship will make a society ignorant and take away their opportunity to express themselves through art.
    Censorship keeps a person from learning ideas that are considered normal. For example, making babies. That kind of thing is blocked from viewers and people, at first, don't know how it happens. However, there are classes to educate people about those things. Therefore, there is no point for censoring that if people are going to be taught those things anyway.
    If censorship is used against art, people have no way of getting their work out to the world. For example, The Dairy of Anne Frank. The book is a record of Anne Frank's experiences and she uses that diary to express how she feels during the Holocaust. If that book were to be censored because the supporters of the Holocaust thought it made them look bad, the rest of the world would never know what it was like to live during that time period and how badly the people were treated.
    Censorship seems as though it would protect the innocent minds, but it actually limits a person's knowledge. People should be allowed to learn from the things that occur in the world. To block it by censoring it, people would not know certain things work and how it can effect the world.

  6. Censorship is needed by society because people are exposed to inappropriate programing at a young age. South Park is a show that people under seventeen shouldn't watch, but they do anyway. It is a vulgar show with mature content. If it were censored then the intelligent thought process of people would increase because they wouldn't have vulgar thoughts. When you have a younger sibling watching shows like that exposes them to the program as well because younger siblings often adapt to the behaviors of their older siblings. The result of this uncensorship corrupts young, innocent minds to wrongfully think.
    Internet should be censored by blocking certain sites of a sexual nature. Then it would be harder for just anyone to go to any site when this person could be of any age. If people were responsible then we could trust them not to go to sites like that, but people are irresponsible because someone had to make the site. This proves that irresponsible people exsist, so we can't let our guard down. Therefore we must censor websites for the decentcy of the internet.
    We, as students, our censored in our writing because we cannot say any profanity. With this handicap our writing improves to a more mature and developed level. This allows us to be more intelligent writers and people develope better opinions of us. Censorship has improved society in these ways, and helps us not to develope our minds in the wrong way.

  7. Censorship is extremely important to today’s society. There are a select few that believe that it is completely unnecessary. I, for one, disagree. I think that people should be able to say and/or write whatever they feel; however, within a few limits. If people did not have the luxury to do just that, America’s population would be severely diminished.
    The Founding Fathers based this country on what appears [today] in the Constitution. Although it doesn’t go into specifics [i.e. censorship], it does clearly mention “Freedom of Speech”. People should have the right to say or display whatever they want in public, as long as it doesn’t harm the future of America in any way. The only problem that I see with this situation is that some people may take advantage of this and display things that should be kept private.
    For example, the media is a perfect analogy. The newscasters and news reporters find any tiny, unimportant detail and turn it into something they think that the public is clamoring to hear more about. This is not the case. The general public likes to hear about the lives of their fellow citizens, but is exposed to uncensored details that sometimes just do not belong on the air.
    The whole concept of censorship is to censor things that are not for everyone’s eyes. However, this will only make the majority of people want to un-censor things that are. It can also be compared to the little kid and the cookie jar. When his mother walks out of the room, he looks toward the door to see if she is coming back, and will keep trying to get a cookie, although she had already told him to keep out. This parallels to the censorship case, in the sense that no matter how many restrictions are put on Americans to censor some parts of life, there will always be those few that attempt to sneak around the rules and do what they please, regardless of the consequences.
    All in all, it has good parts, which outweigh the bad ones. If people censored everything that they thought might be taken the wrong way, then the world would know a lot less than it does now. People would be afraid to tell anyone anything, for fear of insulting the wrong person. Censorship has many more benefits than consequences, so people should learn to abide by the rules and not try to go against them. They are there for a reason.

  8. @ Caylen: I was wondering what you meant by "It really depends on the sanity and maturity of the person." I didn't quite understand what that meant. i understand what sanity and maturity is, but not in this context.
    I also agree with your statement about the Adult Swim, and how censorship blocks some of the "cool parts of the show." When I watch Family Guy sometimes, it bleeps out some of the funniest parts. It does get really annoying. Otherwise, I really liked your statements and analysis. Good job!

  9. Tons of people in todays society would argue that they want to be cencored. This is because most people dont want to be put out there. Most people like to keep their thoughts private. I would personally have to diagree completely. Simply because of the fact that all of our voices should be heard no matter what we are thinking.
    I am the type of person who speeks out loud; meaning that I always say what is on mind. Now you may be asking your self right now, "But alonso, if you say whatever your thinking arent people going to think that your a big jerk when you say what you shouldnt say?". This may be true but if I hold back what I am thinking then im not shoing who I really am inside. Therefore I do not agree with cencoring things.
    For this reason I admire comedians. Comedians are the type of people who will always say what they think. The interesting way that these intelectual individuals make there opinions and thoughts into society, is by using their humor. They catch the atention of people about these unspoken situations that are usually censored by making it public and funny. So we should always remember that if we are going to say something, we should do it in a laughable way so no one gets iritated.

    You make some very interesting points that I had never even thought about. After reading your thoughts on the matter of cencoring I have come to realize its actually really great to censor some things. I have seen both the show "Keeping up with the Kardasian" and violent video games. Both of which my mother does not aprove of. I never realized that those beautiful sexy girls can be idolized by young girls. That worries many parents because those party girls are not good examples of a mature adult. Also the video games that you mentions are very volgor. The violent conduct shown on those games can really drive a kid to do some dangerous stuff. I apreciate your thoughts and opinions on the subject of censoring.

  11. Although censorship is a dilemma that has fallen on all sorts of societies, there should be some limit that restricts us from exposing too much. For many years a organized groups have tried stepping up to censor literature such as Huckleberry Finn. Also games such as NARC, banned for scenes where drugs were being used. Even music by bleeping, skipping, or distorting it.

    Huckleberry Finn a famous novel that has been read through out decades is one of the recent piece of literature that has been changed. The publisher company decided to make these changes but it was wrong of them. They basically tempered with someone else's work of literature without their permission. Has society gotten so obsessed with censorship that they will start banning books and novels such as what happened in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451? Maybe not that exaggerated but it seems that society does one thing but then acts hypocritical and does another. This book should have never been changed, maybe it should just be offered to a mature audience.

    Some video games now a days are so caught up in making it the best action thrilling game that they forget that sometimes there's a line that should not be crossed. The game NARC was banned for their drug scenes. Smaller children get their hands on these type of games and their mental stability gets messed up, maybe not a mental illness but a way of thinking. Games are meant to be fun and harmless not violent and traumatizing.

    Another topic involving the usage of censorship: is music. Artist sometimes have to go over their music and take out any inappropriate words or phrases and replace it to air it on the radio. This seems respectful of the artist because they seem like they care about other morals and want to respect their ideas. Maybe censorship is good to a certain extreme but when is censorship absurd or too exaggerated and useless? This is a very controversial question to ask but sometimes it depends on the individual to choose what they want to censor for themselves also because maybe it"s something they may not like.

  12. Amy A: Your views on censorship are similar to mine in that you believe censorship is good to some extreme. People should think about what they may block because it may lead to a negative outcome. All in all i really think that your views were well presented. Your examples were well written. I also aree that sometimes it might have more of a positive outcome than a negative outcome.

  13. Freedom is one of the greatest rights that we have here in America. Many of the founders of this beautiful country struggled for us to receive this special right. Now in the 21st century we see that we do not have full ownership of freedom. Today censorship has become a great controversy. Society feels that they have the prime right to censor what we write, what we do, and what we produce as the artists of our own life.

    In America, a large amount of the funds designated to education go to the sciences and the arts. Art is what helps the youth express themselves without being judged and without being told that it is right or wrong. Then, there comes a time where "one's view of the world" is not correct. This is where censorship steps in. For a reason or another, our art or our work is considered to be bad or it shows a bad aspect of one's nation.

  15. There are many arguments that are used to refute and support censorship. Many ideas that surround the argument that censorship should be allowed, always comes to child development. However, it is in my belief that censorship is a disrespectful way to suppress ideas and opinions. Who is to say that these beliefs or scenes are offensive? The viewers? The government? The parents of adolescence? Having others decide what is appropriate and what isn’t for viewers is like saying the viewers are too inept, or too stupid, to decide for themselves. Censorship is a sign of disrespect to the person who is allowing their insights and opinions to be known and, or televised.

    Child development is one of the many reasons why censorship is allowed; violence and pornography is not an appropriate subject for adolescence. However, everyone has their opinions to what their child should be allowed to watch. It is a common belief that it is the parent’s responsibility to shield their child from such improper behavior. Yes, there are many things that influence children and many of these influences come from the internet and television. However, in my own experience, I have found it difficult to listen to superior authorities when it comes to such matters. Kids, and even teenagers, are curious. This curiosity is piqued even more when a parent, or guardian tells them “no.” “What is it that I can’t see or hear?” They would think and in the midst of learning what is so bad, they would discover something that was considered “not age appropriate.” This is how many young teens learn about sex and drugs. Therefore, it wouldn’t matter if a parent censors something because their child would soon uncover it, whether it be out of curiosity or through other influences.

    There is no way of knowing who chooses what to censor. This could be a violation of freedom of choice. I believe with all my heart that people should be allowed to choose what they want to see or hear; adolescent or not. Censorship is also violating the person’s freedom of speech. Everyone is allowed to say how they feel and having another censor them because they think is it not proper for viewers, is like saying their ideas do not matter. In any way, whether it is in music or culture, censoring is disrespectful. It is true that it can have its benefits, but overall, if someone were to take my opinions and block them from the media because they fear its consequences, I would be disgusted by society’s judgment.

Although many poeple may contradict the fact that todays society should be cencored, I would have to oppose thoughs people and say that todays society should be cenored in some cases.Thoughs cases being "pornography, violence, drugs etc". What would kids learn off seeing this type of nonsense? I beleve there should be concorship for the youth and the mature.

    We all now that children tend to mimic what they see. So if we know this why put all theses bad concepts into the youth? As we see children, "teens" to be exact are experimenting more with sex. Why because sex is no longer a restrained subject, sex is talked about every where. The more one says dont do it. The more a persons going to want to do it.

    Although i do agree the people should have the freedom to express them self, because we do live in a free country where freedom of spech is allowed. Therefore people should be allowed to hear and see what they want. Although we should take into consideration the people around us and what affect will our "freedom of speech" have on them.

  17. Our First Amendment states that the American people have the freedom of speech; it should have said that the American people have the freedom of speech if it is appropriate. People who tend to use profanity, or display explicit images to the world use the excuse that they “have the freedom of speech”. However, people should have the freedom of speech within their own groups. For example, those drugies you see in allies should be able to express themselves around their friends or other drugies. They shouldn’t be around elementary schools talking to or expressing their ideas to those children, for it might influence them to turn into a different path then intended.

    Yes, everyone should be able to express themselves, but to whom? If those drugies were to express themselves to the wrong group of people, then there would be chaos between many people. It is an effective idea to censor out explicit images and language to protect the moral values of young children. People might get offended for having their ideas blocked out, but their idea is still expressed without the radical language. As for images, images can automatically be blocked out without any consequences. If someone were to get mad because their ideas in graphic images are blocked out, then they can get mad. The first amendment states freedom of speech, not freedom of images.

    More and more children are learning about sex and other mature things before they should even be thought about. Children imitate the things they see on T.V. because they are supposedly “cool,” but people don’t see how that is affecting the moral values of young children. More and more children are starting to play around with things like sex, drugs, and extreme language all because things were not censored out on television, radio, or even school.

    Society SHOULD limit people's exposure to most kinds of information or forms of expression because no one would want to see pregnant 10 year-olds in the future. The teen pregnancy rate is increasing, and a new rate is forming: pre-teen pregnancy. If things don’t become more censored soon, we will be facing a world where all moral principle values are lost.

  18. Censorship, in my opinion, is another way of opressing American rights. In a sense censorship is a violation of American rights. Censorship is not necessary. There will always be the people who find a way around it and there will be people who avoid the object being censored. For example, take music played on the radio. Most stations are required to censor certain words from the song out of respect to the listener. I find this pointless as the listener is obviously going to know what the word was. The static or "beeping-out" of the song just comes across as an annoyance. If the song is truly so inappropriate to be played on air without censoring, then leave it out of the playlist intirely.
    I find censorship to be pathetic and annoying. Why censor something when someone is always going to find a way to get it "uncensored"? It seems to be a total waste of time. I remember some time ago there was this outrage due to a website that showed the vicious murder of a man with a screw-driver and a hammer. People were disgusted and they had a reason to be, but why were they looking up such things in the first place? The human mind is a very perverse thing. There is countless amounts of internet "garbage" that is just not going away. So, instead of fighting for censorship, leave it alone and just avoid the whole concept of it. There is always going to be a sick and demented person out there that looks these things up. It is best off to leave them alone.
    Censorship violates the rights of an American. Each American is entitled to a freedom of speech. To censor ones words, is to take away that freedom. Were are even forced to deal with censorship on a daily basis, that in my opinion affects our learning in a negative fashion. When you are in your history class and are wondering why the teacher is not giving any details into the Holocaust or into the Armenian Genocide, it is due to censorship. They find it inappropriate to teach students the truth! They dumb it down so that we will not be disgusted, but history is full of disgust and it is our right to know about it.

  19. Things should not be censored from the people, although there are something that should be censored for young people. There should be limit between ages. Children should not see the violence, the horror or the sexual content of movies, news, and television. There are things that are to dangerous for a young baby to watch. Not only is it dangerous for them to watch, but it can also cause emotional scaring. As for an adult they can watch anything and know the difference between right and wrong.

    Things should be censored for little children. I have a three year old brother and a two year nephew who like to watch cartoons; people may not think that cartoons contain violence, but they do. After the little ones' show is over they often g off and play and in ten minutes they return with their fingered shape guns. They act out a whole scene of a cartoon; tell us they are going to kill us. This cartoons are for little kids and already contain violence. Things like should be censored for our kids. Not only d we have to worry about our children, but what other people feel about our comments.

    A person should be very careful in what they say because they can easily hurt another persons feelings. If a person had liberty to curse and talk nonsense about another than there would be no peace at school. There are a lot of people who get into fights or arguments for little dumb remarks that could be avoided. Often this remarks are racist comments heard on TV, movies, or music. Remarks like those should be censored. Not only for the sake of others, but for peace as well.

When you think of censorship,what does it mean for something to be censored?Does censoring something mean the "bleeping" out of a word that you are so used to and believe it should not have been "bleeped out" while watching tv?How about when there is a re-run of a rencetly featured movie in theaters and there is a particular part that is favored more than the rest that has been "cut out"?Yes and no,this is censorship;but it is not to take away the things you are used to and enjoy having in your shows.Censorship is the protection of all of the people from things that may be too graphic or unneccesary:yound and old,big and small.
    It does not mean that everything that may be seen as offensive should be censored.If the government were to do that,then that would show an abuse of power.Of course the world is filled with an enormous ammount of infants,children,and teenagers;but also containing adults who are much older who are not offended by things that are censored to a large portion of people.There should be few things that are not censored to show that the world is not just filled with little boys and girls.
    Censorship is meant for the young,not to restrict from a better type on enjoyment;but to be kept until the young are not so young anymore and ready to view/listen to what was not viewable before.

  21. Censorship is not all about relabeling or keeping vile things from coming out. It is about protecting society from any dangerous or violent things from happening. It is to prevent the worse case scenario. For example, critics are needed to ensure that any kinds of performances from the arts are kept to be "clean" or decent for the public eyes to view. Sometimes censorship are hard to cope with when people are curious to what is really happening, but it keeps the viewers from endangering themselves.
    Most of the time, people, especially the youth, need to be well protectedfrom anything vile. At young ages, kids look up to what they see or hear. If they are misguided to what they set on, then it would create them to follow what is shown. Censorship is a way to contain others from bad decisions. For example, movies are rated for different ages of people to see it in. It is rated because kids and young adults are not yet ready for the impact of varieties of motion pictures.
    Artists make their own original master piece, but their works always have to be checked for approval. Such as, music, art, movies, radios, and sometimes the internet. Literature can also have censorship, but it can have a hidden message to define in any literature. It is a good thing to have censorhip because it prevents bad contamination to the minds of young people.

  22. To Alonso Corrujedo: Alonso I would have to disagree with you. Yes, people voices should be heard, but there should always be a limit to what they say. You wouldn't like it if a random person went up to and called you ugly? Humor does make evertthing better, but it can often come out very offense(satire). If everyone gets to say what they want then there would be a lot of drama in the world.That's why there should be a limit to what people say.

  23. In AVID today, we had a Socratic seminar and spoke of things like facebook and censorship. I remember stating that the world today isn't one in which can be trusted. At least not anymore. I continued thinking about this throughout the day and realized that censorship is good to a certain extent. When a person's life is endangered than the work should be monitored. If it's threatening anything, then it should be monitored as well. On the other hand censorship should not apply to everything. Art, music and literature are ways people express themselves. As a musician, I would hate if my music was censored (not stating that if I was famous, the would be a need to censor it). Music is a form of expression and censoring it is as if someone was attempting to censor my feelings. Many famous people, including Benjamin Franklin, have influenced our society with their writings. Others have entertained us with their poems, and short poems like Edgar Allan Poe. Censoring works is okay to a certain extent.

  24. People placed in today’s society hold many opposing ideas and opinions to one another. Censorship, in many ways can be beneficial in society. However, it does limit freedom, which causes many conflict to arise. So is it right to say restricting certain information, such as thoughts and opinions, from the public is acceptable?

    Although suppressing certain information slightly violates freedom of speech, it deems necessary to be done. However, there are limits when it comes to censoring. Censoring certain thoughts and opinions of an individual violates their freedom of speech, but censoring inappropriate behavior such as: inappropriate language, pornography, drug use, weapons, and gang related affairs can be found appropriate for the situation.

    A prime reason why certain subjects are censored is because of child development and human behavior. It wouldn’t be suitable to place a three year old child in front of a television set with pornography on. Another example would be watching a movie with unsuitable behavior that may contain gruesome scenes of head bashing or violent actions. Over time, this can result in adopting inappropriate behavior that the child does not fully understand. The use of drugs and weapons can cause much curiosity in many, which can lead to harmful experiences with such elements.

    Restraints in material can be found much more beneficial rather than damaging. Censorship has potential to provide individuals with a foundation for a better development of lifestyle.

  25. The concept of freedom is important because if society was to censor things, upon what laws and conditions would they be establish? How are going to determine what is morally correct? If we think about it this is a hard concept because of the diversity that now exists in America.
    Dictionary.com defines censored as, “any person who supervises the manners or morality of others.” This intrigues my attention because if we as a country are being censored then what freedom do we really obtain? Like many other have mention before, our founding fathers spend their life fighting for our rights as individuals. In addition, the Founding Fathers made it very clear, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness". Perhaps I might be taking it too far, but I don’t believe we should be blinded by the evil or bad behavior that surrounds us.

    The bad things that exist not only in America but in the world are inedible. Our children and even teens will be exposed to the bad influences either way. People will still find a way for inappropriate things, or immorally incorrect scenarios to be shown. Instead of focusing so much on what we should censor, we should instead focus on Educating our youth to avoid them falling into temptation. If we educate teens to be confident, strong, and determined then they will be able to resist temptations and prevent teen pregnancy.

  26. For years, questions about censorship have been occupying people’s minds. Is censorship good for society? If so to what extend? Does it violate our rights as citizens? We all have different views on this subject, but the truth of the matter is that censorship is not correct. It is up to an individual to decide what they should and should not see, read, or hear.

    Some say that censorship is good, but to a certain extent. Ones you give the power to someone to control what they want you to hear, see, and read they are the ones making the decisions not you. How do you know that you get only have of the information, and make a judgment without understanding the whole story? In thought, it is a good idea, but we are all humans and make mistakes. The people in charge of deciding what should be censored will do so using their own thoughts and judgments not the publics. Therefore, they could censor things they do not want the public to know about or things they do not agree to be right.

    Furthermore, it is up to each person to block the things they do not want to see. Just because something is not censored does not mean that you are going to see it. You see what you want to see. Everyone has different standards and to one seems wrong to someone it may seem normal. This is why ratings should be used. Before you are going to watch a show or movie, you can look at the rating (and its explanation) to see if it is suitable for you.

If parents worry about something being inappropiate for their children then they should take certain measures to make sure that they are not exposed to that. We shouldn't expect someone else to raise our children for us, or teach them what is write or wrong.

    I saw a different aspect of censorship reading your post. I had not thought of parents controlling g what their children watch and see. Many things out there are not meant for smaller children or even teenagers. When small children see violent or sexual content, they begin to want to do those things, even if they do not understand what they are trying to do. I was thinking of censorship more in a governmental way. I think that government should not censor things, but it is up to the parents to decide what they want their children to see.

  29. Censorship is violating are freedom of speech. Are first amendment state that we have freedom of speech so the government can’t mess around with are amendment. This might be right but in a way we need censorship because our society has change. Now people do crazy stuff and don’t think twice of what they are doing. Now we need television shows to be censored because young kids do everything see. For example if a young kid watch adult say bad words the young kids start to repeat them. We need to censor those thing we need are brothers or kids to be careful of what they watch in television.
    Censorship has changed society in many positive ways one is that it has help to keep something away from kids. The government should keep something censored because in a way if adult wants watch it they what it uncensored. Some people might not like it but in way it has help us because it has not taught us bad things. If you would watch things uncensored you would watch all the stupid things people do today.

  30. Censorship is very big in society today because they don’t want children to be corrupted or influenced by things, such as violence, sex, or drugs. Music nowadays, are especially censored. The lyrics are related to something sexual, and even the beat of the song. There are curse words, especially by rappers that the radio censors. When songs are being played on the radio, there are two versions: the original and the censored version.

    There is a lot of censorship in video games and movies because of all the violence and sex scenes that seem inappropriate. If children see that, parents can teach their children from what is right and wrong. It is natural that everybody sees and knows of things going on in the world, including the bad things. Society is using censorship to hide many things. People don’t like it when you censor certain things because they want to see it. That leaves them more curious of what would have been seen or heard if uncensored.

    I believe that when you censor someone, it takes away their freedom to express themselves. Every time you hear a *beep*, you know that it is blocking a bad word that shouldn’t be aired on television or the radio. Censorship takes away freedom of speech, and not allowing a person to say what they want. I also speak my mind freely to express how I feel. Imagine if the whole world was censored, and when a bad word comes out, all you hear is *beep* *beep* *beep*!

  31. Censorship, has always been an area of controversy. Some approve of it, while others think it a violation of their rights. So then by what means can we ever come to a conclusion on censorship if it is such a touchy and debatable subject? I myself have a hard time answering whether or not censorship is a good thing.

    All forms of media and entertainment are capable of being censored. Which draws the moral question of whether or not this encroaches upon the rights of producers, musicians, writers, etc. I believe everyone is entitled to their on thoughts and opinions. Many of the things that are censored belong to someone else, and are forms of self expression. Who are we to tell an artist that their art is not art? Or that it is not worthy to be shown to the public in its entirety? Sure there are many things that I see today that I find highly inappropriate, but I control what ever images I watch and what information I allow to enter my thoughts.(one of the many reasons I don't care much for television.)Often times I do worry at what our society has come to and think how much better it would be if we could uphold some good values and morals as a society and that maybe things should be censored. But I don't see that changing anytime soon, and who's to say what should or should not be censored? I see this as a family issue. If I had children of my own and I didn't want them to be influenced by certain images or music, then I would have to take that into my own hands. Rather than just wait around to notice bad behavior or get mad about what the society values and allows.

    On the other hand, I think of what would happen if censorship was more present in our society. Who would control it? Who would be the one to say what is and what is not acceptable for our viewing or hearing? I think there is a possibility of it coming to an extreme. Something similar to that of George Orwell's “1984” or current days North Korea. I understand that this may sound far too severe, but one truly must think where would the lines be drawn. It has always been difficult to place restrictions on things involving moral issues, simply because everyone is so opinionated and have their own beliefs on what is right or wrong.

  32. Society should limit informatiom to certain types of peole.If its being censored its for a good reason. Many peple may think this is wrong, for taking some parts of what they are trying to say.

    Some censorship is good for example when little kids are watching television, and inappropriate words its agood thing that the words get beeped. Another reason is when children are being exposed to violence. This censership help the children from being exposed to violence.

    Media censorship is also necessary for all the sexually, violence, and racism being exposed in television now a day. This is shows that the media is not attacking certain types of people.

  33. Damian: Your opinions seem to contradict each other. You start off by stating you oppose others' opinion of agreeing with censorship. Then you have another statement saying there should be censorship for the youth and mature. However, I am assuming you believe that censorship should not he used in today's society. You state that children tend to mimic what they see. If this is so, shouldn't it be necessary to censor subjects such as pornography and inappropriate behavior? You have to take into consideration that the human development of the brain varies differently from others. In some cases, there will be curious individuals that might want to experiment with drugs or sex and there will be those who take in the knowledge to learn from others' mistakes. Censorship should be taken into consideration when dealing with the minds of the adolescents.

  34. It has come to my realization that this is not a solid black and white issue. Certain areas concerning censorship contain shades of gray and it is hard to tell whether or not censorship should be considered useful and helpful in today's society. It is definitely a controversial topic that leaves many people, including me, on the sidelines, not sure whether to jump to the other side or stay in the middle.
    One thing's for sure: the freedom to express yourself is a right that should never be violated. Say what you want to say, write what you want to write, draw what you want to draw, sing what you want to sing, do what you want to do! No one can control your thoughts and emotions. It's a free country, and any violation to your right for self-expression is high disrespect. You can't just tell someone their work of art should not be shown for the world to see when they want it to be shown. It goes against everything Americans worked hard to represent.
    But how do Americans want to be represented these days? It's a touchy subject to broach upon, especially when you consider shows that are currently being displayed on television. The media is all about mass-consumption and audience appeal. They will expose the public to the things they want to see. “Jersey Shore” is an example of a show that has gained worldwide fame. The show is prone to excessive “bleeping” due to their heavy use of vulgar language and their inappropriate behavior. How does this represent America? Are the presented as outrageous, rotten-mouthed pigs, even though their words are censored? Some people encourage this type of censorship, finding such curse words to be offensive and prude. But why censor it when most of its viewers know what they're talking about and what they're doing? It should be up to the viewer's choice whether or not they want to be subjected to watching such shows. As for the concerns of young, immature audiences watching these shows, it should be the responsibility of the parent or guardian to take action and do whatever they need to do to ensure proper growth for their child – not the media's.
    Censorship all comes down to how you want to be presented to the world. It all boils down to not anybody's choice, but yours.

  35. Todays society should probably know that what ever you see in television, can also been seen in real life. It is a good thing that there are some stuff in television that are censored but maybe they should not show the things that influence young children. Children can easily be influence and they can copy who ever and what ever they see on t.v.
    Everyone moslty watch's, " The Jersey Shore" and yes it can be funny but if children also watch this, maybe the adult that is there should approve for that child to see that type of show. There are other shows like that but my point is how in the show the jersey shore, they show people drinking, using sexual contact, and ect. Most of the things on that show are censored which is a good thing because if it was not, then who knows how children or others would react.
    Another good example that should be censored is that i have and ipod touch and i know that a lot of people have one. When you go to the app store and look for a game or some type of entertainment you can end up finding an app about sexual poses or other things like that. I do not know who would get that app and i do now know why it is even an app, but it should be censored to a certain age. Like most laws it should know what your age is so that way those types off apps will not pop up becuase even little kids play on ipods, maybe they use there parents, but they can come across that and think many negative thoughts. So my opinion is to agree on censory, even though it can limit our freedom, it does not mean that it will hurt us.

  36. Since day one we begin to comprehend that there are things that should and should not be said or done. As we grow older we begin to comprehend what censorship is without actually calling it censorship. Some people are taught differently than others, and even though we all have censorship inside of us some have less than others. In those cases people are the ones that have to do the censorship. Since Nowadays, we believe that teaching our children what is right or wrong is the most important thing, we are careful on what we show them. Adults know what children should not be seeing or hearing and that is why Censorship is developed.

    Since a lot of parents do not appreciate their children listening to music about drugs and sex on the radio they change the station. The station is being affected by this and they can't do anything but take a stand and censor things before they keep losing listeners. Losing listeners is losing money.

    Free speech is a big deal in our society. We could say anything we want and please, but we also know what is right and what is wrong. Playing profanities on the radio or showing something inappropriate on Tv is morally wrong. That is why most artists do not get mad when their music or shows are censored.
    In conclusion, things should be censored to a point in which everyone is happy and everyone agrees.

  38. As listed in the First Amendment of The Bill of Rights, Americans are guaranteed the freedom of speech. However, to what extent of speech is considered free? Censorship serves as a primary method of prohibiting any material considered 'taboo' in current society. I have always been taught, from teachers to strangers, every word has significant meaning, strip it from ears and what's the purpose of speaking? It is not society's responsibility to decipher what is appropriate and what isn't; instead, allow the full message of an artist's work to shine through.

    A great deal of censorship is derived from the most critical details. If I were to say “My stomach yearns with agony for the distant sensations of a Whopper”, great emphasis would be placed on the fact that I was desiring a burger. Censor certain details and it may simply read, “I am very hungry.” As an author, I would partake the utmost highest sense of disrespect being that my true intentions were blocked by censorship. Perhaps the phrase “Mickey Mouse Job” best describes the frustration of censorship. Simplifying major actions distorts the entire focus, just like mopping without a cleaning detergent, sure it gets the job done, but it also defeats the purpose.

    Contrary to traditional beliefs, censorship actually helps differentiate the wrongs and rights. For centuries, the excuse has always been that inappropriateness will have a negative influence on its viewers. Realistically, who controls what meets the individual eye? the individual themselves. There is no one to determine good and bad besides the viewer, and if they decide to restrict what information they absorb, so be it. A major defect of censorship is the unawareness it brings upon people. For example, if a recent kidnapping occurred in the fictional city of Patroville, and the fact that a child committed the crime was censored from society while authorities knew of it (a rather common background structure in social news), the public may already be preparing for intrusion of the wrong sort.

    Just as the positioning of words in a text greatly affects its tone, information omitted in the media can have devastating effects on society. Words serve a detrimental role in emotion, and censorship, all too commonly, disrupts that role.

  39. Censorship could be seen as a way of restricting freedom of speech, however it is use as a form of protection. There may be a heated discussions whenever important information or forms of expressions are censored. In my opinion, I see this as acceptable way to protect our nation. Censorship keeps our society shield away what to some is consider unacceptable for viewers to see publicly. There are other ways to see an image or writing uncensored, if you may wish to do so knowing the consequences you are getting into.

    For those who don't know the consquences, censorship could be used as a way of protecting the young ones who are naive of what they are watching or reading. For example, me and my little brother used to watch anime and he would remain clueless to their puns and their double meanings. He never knew what the show's main plot was but he was attracted to it by the funny faces the characters made. Whenever there were fighting scenes they were quickly censored; and if you watch the original version you could see how gory and bloody the fighting scenes were. These voilent scenes could have easily tramatized any child or affected their behavoir as they grew up.

    There are also times when it use a way to protect a person's feelings. People are often sensitive and would cause a commotion if they were insulted in any way. Censorship helps avoid fights, because there could be a situation when a piece of writing is misread and they get the wrong impression. Your form of expressing could be another's form of insulting, this rule also goes to information. Important information could be seen as personal information that may not want to be given away. Censoring may seem that it goes to the extreme but it is a small price for our protection.

  40. Censorship can be seen as something positive and negative. People are always going to have different views on this topic. Censorship can be good because there are somethings that people should not be exposed to but then there are things that people are obligated to know.
    Freedom of speech is another topic that is frequently connected with the topic of censorship. We are granted the right of freedom of speech in the constitution. I think thats fair to a certain extent but somethings are better left unsaid. Some things that are said are hurtful towards others but on the other hand we need to be able to speak up against something we do not believe is right.
    The reason why i think censorship is okay is because somethings that are shown on tv and played on the radio are just not okay for certain groups of people. I would not want my kids listening to music that talks about sex, drugs,and violence on the radio. Its a good thing that there are censors on tv or else there'd be no telling what showing on the tv.

  41. Censorship on Cd's and Television shows are useless. This is because, Famous people such as 50 cent and Emenim get more publicity and more Cd sales. People, like young adults are always going to do what they want because they are stubborn. Lastly, they are a waste of money and time for the people putting these censorship's up.

    On a MTV interview, artist 50 cent and Eminem have confessed that having a warning, "Parental Advisory" to keep young kids away from, listening to their "bad music" actually attracts the younger crowd. Younger adults and kids are always trying to find the next thing to feel make them feel bad and cooler. The advisory does not stop kids from buying it, stores are trying to sell their Cd's so they are still going to be exposed. This means that more kids, that parents do not want to be exposed to this kinds of music, are being exposed.

    Young adults have always been known to rebel against anything says. The worse the shows are the more they are going to watch it. Violence attracts the eye, especially a curious young kids. How are parents going to try to stop this? Putting a lock on their television isn't going to help, they have friends and either way are going to be exposed to these eye-balling shows.

    It is a waste of money and especially a waste of time. People hire other people to censer shows, which cost. The thing is that either way the person will know what the word censored is? so why bother covering it. The economy is really bad, so why waste your money on useless things such as censorship. Also, again a waste of time, putting it on Cd's because it attracts the younger crowd because they are trying to rebel.

    Censorship is foolish, and unneeded. It is a lot of work to do, for what? nothing basically. Censorship isn't needed because it waste money, brings in a younger crown and we all know what the word under the black line is.

    Censorship. The topic has been coming up a lot lately. First with the book Huckleberry Finn, and then with the pedophile who wrote the how to guide on "loving" children. With this topic its hard not to "waffle". On one hand Huckleberry Finn seems harmless. Yes there are racial slurs and inappropriate language, but Twain wrote them in there for a reason. However, censorship is a good idea.

    The how to guide makes it clear that we need censorship. somethings are just too inappropriate to be out and available to the public. Children these days are subjected to too much. They might think that its ok for an adult to "love" them. Likewise, If the item in question goes into the wrong hands, such as a pedophile, they can use that material to there advantage. To take advantage of little kids, of minors like us. To help not let things get out of hand like this, censorship is the only way.

  43. i believe that censorship in a societyis super important because many of the things veiw or said in public could potentially be offensive or even harm others. i do not think that everything thing should be censored but of course thereshould be a limit to the things veiwed by society. For example,facebook is a worldwide network with millions and millions of people veiwing each others profile everyday.People could easily offend another by simply posting certain comments on their status or by adding another persons name in with it.
    Tv is also another thing of society that is positively censored for the most part. Many things shown on television are not suitable for certain ages or maybe just offensive.i believe that a show should be censored depending on the audience that is intended to watch it.People of a certain age might become influenced by the things they see or hear from their favorite stars or characters of their favorite show. Evn though most times we usually know what exact word is being censored, it has a more respectful manner and saves certain people from feeling offended or others from mimicking their idols.

    jersey shore is one of those reality show were it is designed to intertain the audience however in a way where people in that show how society is how it is now.the way jersey shore portraited to the audience may give someone else the idea that this societ acts like them.there should always be limits set n how everything is said or done.
    another example would be the movie "jackass" those movies are meant to intertain the audience;however they do it in a very dangerous way that can cause harm for the audince who is truly devoted to it and willing to try the same thing.
